Meet Dr. Mauricio S. Garcia, an associate professor and chief of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Department of Internal Medicine, who holds the endowed Jerome S. Levy Chair in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

What does your daily work involve?

I take care of patients with complex acute, chronic liver disease. I also do endoscopy procedures that help patients to prevent and treat many other disorders.

I have other types of responsibilities within the gastroenterology division, such as its growth for better quality care and attention to patients in the state of Arkansas.

Did you get an educational degree or go straight to work?

I have a medical degree followed by specialty training in internal medicine, gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. I currently work certified in the three disciplines.

Where do you live and why did you choose Arkansas?

I live in Little Rock, specifically in the west. I choose to live in Arkansas because of the opportunities to develop a vision that can help to improve access to health care, specifically in gastroenterology and hepatology.

I was born in Mexico City. I  earned my medical degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico in 2004 and completed my internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the prestigious Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubiran. Last year I obtained my American citizenship certificate.

What are your hobbies?

My biggest hobby is spending time with my family, enjoying all the outdoor places that this beautiful state offers such as biking, hiking in the nature, canoeing on the Buffalo River, etc.

What do you hope for next in your career, life and the state of Arkansas?

My commitment is to continue growing the gastroenterology division to provide better patient care. My goal for Arkansas would be to have a comprehensive world health care system.
