Minority-Owned Businesses and the Key to Longevity

People are at the core of every business. The more you know people the better you can grow, promote, and manage your business. Connecting communities is a way to help our Central Arkansas region be prosperous, inclusive, and a powerful economic force. A force that is driven by an understanding of each other and the principles that govern a successful business.
Now as Director of Business Inclusion at the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce it is my job to help minority businesses become this force. By creating events that respects culture and their interest, holding bilingual workshops, and being the center plaza that they visit to voice their concerns and continue to learn about starting and operating a business. Having a place where businesses can meet regularity and connect with other businesses is extremely valuable.
So valuable Chambers have been that there is a phrase used in Spanish “voy a la chamba” or “a chambear” that people utilize to emphasis that they are going to work. I believe that this speaks to how instrumental Chambers are to our economy. A vast reserve of resources for small and minority businesses to tap into. At the end of the day whether you are developing the product or service, selling it, or managing people—you can always count on the importance of learning and connecting with people.
Small and minority owned business can grow by gaining support from their community, expanding the awareness of their business and market, and continuing to learn. As we know, small businesses owners wear a lot of hats as running a business requires a multitude of expertise or knowing where to find individuals that hold them.
Drafting a business plan, hiring staff, marketing your product or service, and applying for loans are tasks that take a time. It’s fascinating to hear stories from minority owned businesses that went through this checklist on their own. No capital, business plan, or marketing consultant. Simply the understanding that there is a need and they’ve got a will to serve that need. They registered their business with the state, IRS, and navigated the cities permit requirements on their own.
Getting small business from survival mode to thrive mode requires breaking down barriers. The challenges faced by minority business owners are often linked to language, time, and representation.
There are certain elements that can’t be taught, only harnessed—like ambition, will, and creativity. Individuals that hold these characteristics create value in our communities. Providing them with the chance to bring visibility to their business by doing a ribbon cutting, stand in front of a LEADS group, or join a committee that reflects their interest is the least we can do.

And they represent a fast-growing group of business owners in Arkansas as well. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Hispanic-owned businesses in the state and the list below includes those who have registered with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission as a minority-owned business.
The mission of the Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Division (MWOBE) is to facilitate the growth, development and expansion of minority and women-owned businesses by helping them gain access to valuable information, new market opportunities and financial resources.
